As seen in Spaniels in the Field Fall 2006   DEUTSCHER WACHTELHUND

The Deutscher Wachtelhund is a 300 year old breed developed in the forests of Germany as a versatile hunting dog. It ranges in weight from 44 – 64 pounds.   It is a water lover, and an excellent duck retriever. The name in German means Quail dog. It is reputed to be the original spaniel.

The DW flushes game like a spaniel, and tracks like a hound making voice or giving tongue on the trail. It is a courageous dog used to hunt wild boars in Germany and bears in Canada. It retrieves both feathered and fur game. It is renown for its tracking ability of game such as the wild boar, and following wounded game blood trails. The Wachtelhund has a nose as good as a bloodhound and proves it in advanced hunting tests by tracking 40 hour old blood trails.

The German breeding practices are highly defined and strictly enforced.  Since 1965 the DW registry (VDW) enforces a breed order that requires both excellent health and proven hunting skills.  .

Wilde Vom Sching is a direct import from Brandenberg, Germany.   She is 54 pounds,  has brown color, OFA hips  and has passed eye certification (CERF).  She has earned the UKC Started Hunting Retriever title and has a NAHRA Started pass as well.

Findus Vom Wolfsberg is a direct import from Hessen, Germany.  He now resides at Oakridge Kennels (http://www.oakridgewachtelhund.com/dogs.html). He is 63 pounds, has reddish color,  OFA/VDW Hip EXCELLENT and has OFA NORMAL Elbows.  After training at Boulder Brook Kennel  He has earned two United Kennel Club Hunting Retriever Club hunt test passes in Spring 2010.  He will work toward finshing his title in May or June.
