Deutscher Wachtelhund (DW)
GERMAN QUAIL SPANIEL; CHIEN D’OYSEL ALLEMAND
In Germany the hunter uses the Wachtelhund in the forests to locate and move
the game into the path of hunters. The Wachtelhund is bred to make voice and
bark on the trial as it drives the game.
Alexander Hubertus Busch
has chronicled his hunts in Fall
2005. He has many taken many photos and has provided me permission to show how
the German hunters use the Wachtelhund. A Group of hunters and several dogs go
into the forests and have a drive of the animals. The harvest is bountiful and
several types of game are found.

We started at the 17th of October with our driven days. Up to
now we had some really good days but also some poor days. There are not many
boar this year compared with last year in our area. Game is driven only by dogs. On these hunts there are no
beaters. There is only one drive per day and the drive takes 3 hours. The
size of the drive is between 400 and 1500 hectare. The guns are spread all
over the drive in different groups. Most time you don’t see your neighbor. |

That was the first driven day on the 17th of October 40km away
from where I live.

Here is where I was standing that day. Saw some red deer but they
where too far away and even too fast. Could have shot a roe but didn’t want
to because of the dogs (I don’t want to give them success on roe, they should
hunt boar and red deer). These driven days are in big (mostly state owned) forests. There is only one drive per day. The drive has a size between 500 to 2000 hectare (1 hectare is almost 2.5 acres). The weapons are used are only rifles from 7mm up. The boar and
deer will be flushed out by dogs. There are no beaters. Normally you don’t
see your neighbor. The drive takes 3 hours (from 10 to 1 o clock normally). It is really
interesting shooting! |

On October 19, it was in the same area about 15km away from
the day before. There where no red deer. It was the best bag of foxes I have ever seen (17). A lot of
roe but not many boar. That day the chief of the shoot expected much, much more
boar in the bag. |

Netti
Weidelsburg 02-697 |
The next hunt was on the 21 of October. This is my Wachtelhund Netti Weidelsburg 02-697 by the hunting
stand. [02 is birth year, and
697 is the number of pup
registered that year]. The dog is a German Spaniel (Deutscher Wachtelhund
www.wachtelhund.org). They are the specialists for flushing out game in the
wood and also flushing out game in the reet and for retrieving. And they are
really nice family dogs. If you see them working on a boar or killing a
raccoon or a cat you can’t imagine that they are playing with little children
when they at home. They are totally balanced. |

It was a very good area for red deer. The planning of the hunt
could have been better from the master...then we would have had probably much
more. |
